Why we believe in standardisation of data with IPSO

What are IPSO Smart Objects?
-
IPSO Smart Objects are basically standard “dictionaries” for devices and sensors.
-
Developed by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), they ensure that devices describe what they measure or do in a uniform way.
-
For example, a temperature sensor, a lamp, a door contact, or a machine. Instead of each device speaking its own language, an IPSO Smart Object says: “I am a temperature sensor, this is my value, this is my unit, these are my settings.”
How does it work?
-
Standardized objects
-
There are predefined objects, for example:
-
Object 3303 = Temperature
-
Object 3311 = Light
-
-
Each object has resources (properties), such as value, unit, thresholds, status.
-
-
Uniform communication
-
Since all devices use this standard, it doesn’t matter which vendor made them: the data comes in the same format.
-
-
Protocol
-
Smart Objects are often used together with LwM2M (Lightweight M2M), a lightweight protocol for efficient device-to-server communication.
-
What does it bring to smart asset management and maintenance?
Imagine a system like AnyWare, which handles maintenance and asset management:
-
Uniform data input: Machines, sensors, and devices all provide their data in the same format. No custom work is needed to interpret it.
-
Faster integration: New devices from different vendors are plug-and-play because they follow the same definitions.
-
Better analysis: Since all data is described in the same way, it’s easier to see trends, enable predictive maintenance, and manage assets.
-
Fewer errors and lower costs: No confusion about what a data point means (e.g., “Is this temperature in °C or °F?”) because the object definition specifies it.
In short:
- IPSO Smart Objects make sure that all sensors and devices speak a common language.
- In a platform like AnyWare, this means you can connect devices faster, compare data more effectively, and plan smarter maintenance.
